There are some movies that may not have the biggest production values or the most polished visual effects, but they still manage to create a unique atmosphere and leave you thinking about them even after the movie ends. This is one such film.
I recently came across this 2012 Tamil sci-fi thriller on Sun NXT, and what immediately caught my attention was the basic idea. Two college students stay back during their holidays, hear frightening stories about a mysterious creature living in the nearby fields, and decide to find out whether the stories are actually true. What begins as curiosity slowly turns into something much more dangerous. Sun NXT currently lists the film in both Tamil and Telugu, making it an easy watch for Telugu viewers as well.
The film runs for roughly 2 hours and 15–25 minutes, depending on the version, and is presented as a combination of science fiction, thriller, horror and mystery. The interesting part is that, even though the movie has some obvious limitations, the central concept and the way the mystery is built are quite engaging.

The Basic Story

Instead, it spends considerable time building the mystery around it.
The Mystery Is the Best Part
For me, the biggest strength of the movie is the way it builds curiosity around the central creature.
The filmmakers understand one simple thing:
Sometimes not showing something is more effective than showing it immediately.
For a considerable portion of the film, the audience hears about the creature before properly getting to see it.
People talk about it.
There are stories about it.
There is fear surrounding it.
Different characters have different beliefs about what it actually is.
All of this creates anticipation.
You start wondering:
Does this creature really exist?
What exactly is it?
Why does it live in that area?
Why are the villagers so afraid of it?
Is the creature supernatural or is there some other explanation?
These questions keep the movie moving.
And honestly, this part of the writing is quite effective.
A Very Different Concept for Its Time
One thing that deserves appreciation is the ambition behind the concept.
Remember, this movie came out in 2012.
At that time, Tamil cinema wasn’t regularly making this kind of creature-based science-fiction horror thriller.
The filmmakers were attempting something unusual.
Instead of making a conventional ghost story, they tried to combine:

The Film Doesn’t Depend Entirely on Horror
Although the movie is often described as a horror film, I would not call it a pure horror movie.

The bigger question is:
“What exactly is this creature?”
That makes the film closer to a mystery-driven sci-fi thriller with horror elements.

The buildup surrounding the creature is arguably more memorable than the final visual execution.
Jagan and the Young Cast
Jagan is another important part of the cast, and his presence adds a different energy to the film.
The younger characters provide the curiosity and adventurous side of the story.
Srijith P.S. and Ajai R. are also part of the central group.

At the same time, some of the lighter scenes feel slightly disconnected from the darker atmosphere.
R. Parthiban’s Presence
R. Parthiban also appears in an important role.
His presence gives the movie some additional weight.
The cast overall is interesting because the film combines relatively young actors with experienced performers.
That combination helps the movie maintain a certain balance.
The Biggest Problem – The Visual Effects
Now we have to talk about the biggest weakness.
The movie had an ambitious idea, but the visual execution hasn’t aged particularly well.
The creature design and effects are not always convincing by today’s standards.
There are moments when you can clearly feel the limitations of the production.
This is especially noticeable during scenes involving the creature.
If the same concept were made today with a much bigger budget, modern CGI, practical creature effects and better motion design, it could potentially become a much more frightening experience.
The idea is stronger than the execution.
And that’s probably the biggest criticism I would have.
But the Limitations Are Understandable
At the same time, I don’t think it is fair to judge a 2012 film entirely by today’s visual-effects standards.
The filmmakers were clearly attempting something unusual.
They were working within the technology and budget available at the time.
The fact that the film tried to create a large-scale creature-based sci-fi thriller in the first place deserves some appreciation.
The production limitations are visible, but the ambition is also visible.
And sometimes that makes the movie interesting in its own way.
The First Half
The first half is mainly about establishing the village, the characters and the mystery.
We learn about the stories surrounding the creature.
We see the curiosity of the students.
The investigation begins.
And slowly, the movie creates the feeling that there is something real behind the stories.
The first half works because it doesn’t rush to explain everything.
The mystery is allowed to breathe.
You keep waiting for the moment when the truth will finally be revealed.
The Second Half
The second half becomes more focused on the central mystery.
The characters get deeper into the situation.
More information starts coming out.
The movie also begins connecting the folklore with its science-fiction ideas.
Some of these portions are genuinely interesting.
However, the pacing becomes uneven in places.
There are sequences that could have been shortened.
Some romantic and lighter moments interrupt the thriller flow.
A tighter edit could have made the overall experience much more effective.
The Climax
The climax is probably the portion that viewers will have the strongest reaction to.
The movie has spent a lot of time building the creature up as something extremely dangerous.
So naturally, expectations become very high.
The final reveal and confrontation are important to the entire film.
The concept behind the reveal is interesting, but the visual presentation may feel underwhelming for modern viewers.
This is one of those movies where the buildup is arguably more impressive than the final payoff.
Still, the climax does answer several questions that the movie has been building throughout its runtime.
Music and Background Score
The music is composed by Sam C.S., and the score contributes to the mysterious atmosphere. Sun NXT also credits him for the film’s music.
The background score is particularly important in a movie like this.
When the filmmakers are trying to make an unseen creature feel dangerous, sound becomes extremely important.
The score helps create tension during the investigation sequences and darker portions.
It may not be an outstanding soundtrack overall, but it supports the mood reasonably well.
Cinematography
The cinematography by Sathish G. is another area that works in the film’s favour.
The rural locations and fields are used effectively.
Night sequences especially benefit from the isolated environment.
The movie understands that the location itself can become a character.
An empty field at night automatically creates a different feeling compared to the same field during daylight.
That visual contrast helps the thriller elements.
Editing and Runtime
The film is around 139–145 minutes, depending on the version listed by the streaming service. Sun NXT currently lists the Tamil version at 145 minutes and the Telugu version at 133 minutes.
Personally, I feel the movie could have benefited from a slightly tighter runtime.
There are certain portions where the story slows down unnecessarily.
The central mystery is strong enough to carry the movie, so some of the additional material wasn’t always necessary.
A sharper edit would have made the movie more gripping.
Is It Actually Scary?
This depends completely on the viewer.
There are some genuinely creepy moments, especially because the movie spends so much time building the creature’s reputation.
The fear comes from the unknown.
You hear about something dangerous before properly seeing it.
That is always an effective horror technique.
However, once the creature is fully revealed, the fear factor becomes somewhat dependent on whether you can accept the visual effects.
So I would say the movie is more intriguing than terrifying.
What Works Best in the Movie?
For me, these are the strongest elements:

The movie takes its time before fully revealing what is happening.

The way the movie talks about the creature before revealing it creates curiosity.
What Doesn’t Work?
There are also clear weaknesses.
1. Visual Effects
This is the biggest issue for modern audiences.

Some scenes could have been shorter.
3. Romance Portions
Some romantic scenes interrupt the thriller flow.
4. Uneven Tone
The film sometimes moves between horror, comedy, romance and sci-fi in a way that isn’t always smooth.

One of the biggest advantages now is that Sun NXT has the movie available in Telugu as well as Tamil.
So if you are a Telugu viewer and don’t usually watch Tamil movies, you don’t necessarily need to watch it with subtitles.
The Telugu version is available on Sun NXT, which makes it easier to experience the story.
Overall, I would describe this as an ambitious but imperfect sci-fi horror thriller.
The movie has a genuinely interesting central idea.
The mystery surrounding the creature is the strongest part.
The village setting works.
The atmosphere works.
The attempt to combine folklore with science fiction is interesting.
The performances are decent.
The music and cinematography support the mood.
But the film is held back by uneven pacing, some unnecessary romantic portions and, most importantly, visual effects that haven’t aged particularly well.
Still, I wouldn’t call it a bad movie.
In fact, I think it is one of those films that becomes more interesting when you look at what the filmmakers were trying to achieve rather than judging only the final execution.
For a 2012 Tamil film, attempting this kind of creature-based science-fiction thriller was certainly ambitious.
And if you enjoy discovering older South Indian genre movies that tried something different, this one is worth giving a chance.

Worth watching for the concept, mystery and atmosphere — especially if you enjoy old-school Tamil sci-fi horror and don’t mind dated visual effects.
